Centralized vs Decentralized Exchanges
Two very different ways to trade VOW — one custodial and order-book driven, the other on-chain and permissionless. Both matter, and they reinforce each other.
Centralized exchanges (CEX)
A centralized exchange is a regulated business that custodies user funds and matches buyers and sellers through an internal order book. Deposits, withdrawals and KYC flow through the venue's own systems. CEXs deliver familiar UX, fiat on-ramps, deep order-book liquidity and high throughput — at the cost of custody: while assets sit on the exchange, the exchange controls them.
Decentralized exchanges (DEX)
A decentralized exchange is a smart contract — typically an automated market maker (AMM) — that lets users swap tokens directly from a self-custody wallet. There is no sign-up and no intermediary holding funds; trades settle on-chain against pooled liquidity supplied by other users. DEXs are open 24/7, permissionless, and transparent, but rely on gas, slippage and the depth of each pool.
